Mouthwash should NOT be given to children under 6. It’s useful for older children who wear braces.

Main points:

– Make sure your child understands that mouthwash is not a drink.

– Teach your child to rinse and spit away.

– Ask your dentist to recommend a mouthwash for your child.

Teeth should still be brushed twice daily but mouthwash may help some children improve their oral care.

“Mouthwash can also be an important tool for children with braces to loosen food particles that may be trapped under wires and in brackets to help keep their teeth clean.”
